Assessing Opportunities

A research client was helping a brand-name
IT firm explore the establishment of a consulting practice in metrics
- business performance measures used in decision-making, assessing
rewards and penalties, and monitoring contracts and service-level
agreements. BR&C
was engaged to perform all the research, direct data-sorting teleconferences
with the IT firm, as well as produce the final report and recommendations.
We identified the leading players and their focus in this dynamic
field, where definitions and capabilities are rapidly expanding.
We determined how metrics are typically implemented, their uses
in areas ranging from supply-chain management, to customer satisfaction
to outsourcing, and key drivers for further growth. And we discovered
which market leaders were open to new partnerships or alliances.
These findings helped the ultimate client decide on whether to
emphasize data gathering or analysis in its own approach to the
market, and design a strategy for thought leadership to provide
maximum value to customers.
Maximizing Outcomes

In an effort to find a partner or establish
a practice of its own in software certification and testing, a
computer consulting group needed to know the extent to which other
major firms had developed standardized testing services as a discrete
service offering. Boston Research & Communications, Inc. conducted
a national canvass of large professional service firms and computer
companies. We identified three with discrete practices and four
others with integrated offerings that had sufficient market presence
to be of interest to the client. For each company we obtained vital
statistics such as size, location and key players, detailed descriptions
of products and services, partnerships and alliances, samplings
of major customers, as well as major differentiating factors among
the players in organizational structure and marketing approach.
The client used the findings to make smarter decisions regarding
its acquisition and internal-development strategies.
